The Gothic Hukvaldy Castle, one of the largest in Central Europe and the third largest in the Czech Republic, dates back to the 13th century. It was founded by the Lords of Huckeswagen. From 1359, it was owned by the Bishop of Olomouc, and later became the archbishopric of an expanded territory. From the 15th to the 17th centuries, the castle underwent many changes. In 1762, the castle was largely burned down, and since that time it has gradually decayed. Efforts were made in the second half of the 20th century to reinforce some of the remaining walls and create a lookout area from the highest terraces.
According to legend, the great Beskyd fighter Ondráš liberated his father, Šebesta, along with other subjects that had revolted in 1695.
The Castle grounds are carefully taken care of these days. Concerts are held in the Baroque castle's chapel, and outdoors between the castle walls, especially in June and July when the town hosts the Janáček's Hukvaldy International Music Festival, begun in 1993. Some concerts take place in the natural amphitheatre with its beautiful surroundings -- a tourist attraction all four seasons of the year. The Festival honours Leoš Janáček, who was born in Hukvaldy, and often spent time there in later life. His home, at number 79, has become a local monument. Janáček's well-known Opera "The Cunning Little Vixen" was largely inspired by the surroundings of Hukvaldy, especially its forests. A bronze statue of the Cunning Little Vixen now stands in the castle park, only a few dozen metres from the natural amphitheatre. Its tail is remarkably shiny, a result of the thousands of hands that have touched the tail over the years by those who believe that a quick rub will bring them luck and grant them all their wishes.
